Editor's Note
The building's architectural concept reflects the European understanding of architecture and decoration of its time. Construction of the opera house began in 1924; its foyer was inspired by the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, while the interiors drew on German theatres. Süreyya Pasha took the idea of building an opera house in Kadıköy from an opera he watched in Vienna in 1900. It was inaugurated on 6 March 1927. On the right of the entrance façade, a seated female figure holds a lyre. The figure on the left holds a quill pen in her right hand and a paper scroll in her left. The female figures are placed symmetrically.
