Editor's Note
It was built by Nurbânu Valide Sultan, wife of Sultan Selim II and mother of Sultan Murad III. This unique work by Mimar Sinan was constructed in 1583 as a source of revenue for the Toptaşı Mosque. It was the last bathhouse Mimar Sinan built. Evliya Çelebi describes it thus: "The Çarşı Hamamı within the market is a most pleasant bath, with fine air and fine construction. It has charming, comely, clean attendants and blue waist-wraps." Ayvansarayî Hafız Hüseyin Efendi also mentions it as "the Yeşildirekli Hamam near the Valide-i Cedid Mosque in Üsküdar."
