Editor's Note
The Church of Hagia Eirene, built in the 4th century, was rebuilt in 548 by the Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian after the fire it suffered in 532. The three-aisled basilica-plan structure consists of three sections: the main space (naos), the narthex (entrance) and the atrium (courtyard). On the half-dome of the apse, against a gilded mosaic ground, there is a broad-armed cross, and on the apse arch an inscription drawn from the Torah meaning 'God is the name of the one who, through the good works he did on earth, secured his ascent to paradise.'
