The Church of Santa Claus (officially the St. Nicholas Monument Museum) in Demre was built upon the death of Saint Nicholas, believed to be the figure of Santa Claus. According to tradition he was buried here for a time before his bones were taken to Bari by Italian sailors. The church served as a place of worship from antiquity until the 20th century.
