Rumkale is a historic fortress in the Nizip district of Gaziantep, set on high rocks where the Euphrates River meets the Merzimen Stream; it now sits on a peninsula formed by the Birecik Dam reservoir. Known through history by many names such as Hromklay, Kal-at el Rum and Kale-i Zerrin, its remains are of Late Roman and medieval character and include the Church of Saint Nerses, the Barshawma Monastery, cisterns and wells.
