Editor's Note
It is a fortress settlement about 3 km from Koyulhisar, on the north side of the Sivas–Erzincan State highway, in a commanding position roughly 150 m above the Kelkit Valley. The castle was built on sheer cliffs descending steeply to the road. There are fortification walls on the southern and southwestern sections of the castle. The pottery collected from the surface shows that the Lower Castle was inhabited from the Iron Age to the Ottoman period and that the castle was used for both defence and settlement. The load-bearing walls, made of stone and wood, were plastered with mud, although there are collapses in places. The roof is of earth laid over wooden beams.
