A registered piece of industrial heritage, the Hasanpaşa Gasworks is one of the most important industrial structures not only in Kadıköy but in all of Istanbul. As one of the oldest industrial facilities on the Anatolian Side, it is among the early examples of Ottoman industrial heritage. In the 1800s, to meet the growing demand for gas on the Anatolian Side, it was decided to build a new gasworks in Hasanpaşa. The operating concession was granted on 1 August 1891, for a term of 50 years, to the Paris-based industrialist and engineer Charles George.
