Editor's Note
From a manuscript we can establish that the Surp Garabet Church was built shortly before 1593. According to one account, the church was built thanks to masters from Van and Muş who had come to Üsküdar to build a mosque. The building was renovated in 1617 through the efforts of Father Zakarya of Van. The church's third restoration was carried out in 1727, during the time of Patriarch Hovhannes IX Golod, under the architecture of Sarkis Kalfa. Opposite the church stood a monastery built for the clergy of Jerusalem. The Patriarch of Jerusalem, Krikor Şığtayagir, added new sections to this building.
