Editor's Note
The waterfront mansion in Ortaköy, beside the Grand Mecidiye Mosque, was built between 1873 and 1875 by Sarkis Balyan for Esma Sultan, daughter of Sultan Abdülaziz. This three-story seaside palace, Neoclassical in style, with masonry exterior and a wooden lath-and-plaster interior, was badly damaged in a fire in 1975. After Esma Sultan's death, the mansion passed to Cemile Sultan, sister of Abdülhamid II, and later to Fatma Sultan. After the proclamation of the Republic, the mansion was sold because the dynastic family was exiled abroad.
