Editor's Note
A historic palace on the Bosphorus shore in Istanbul's Beşiktaş district. The area took its name from the light festivals (Persian "çerâğân") held there in the 18th century. The present palace was built between 1863 and 1871 under Sultan Abdülaziz by Sarkis Balyan of the Balyan family in an eastern architectural style. Largely ruined by a fire in 1910, it was restored beginning in 1987 and opened as a hotel in 1992.
