Editor's Note
The Monastery of Saint Nicholas (Hagios Nikolaos) lies on the eastern shore of the island. You can reach it either by the coast road or by another path leading up from the square below the summit of Yüce Tepe. The monastery stands on and beside the Byzantine settlement of Kayra, which had been abandoned since the seventeenth century after being ruined in a fire. In history, the monastery was first mentioned by the English traveller Thomas Smith in 1680. The original katholikon of the monastery may have stood on the site of the Kayra parish church and been rebuilt from that building's ruins.
