Located in the Karaköy quarter of Beyoğlu, Surp Pırgiç Church was the first church built in Istanbul by the Catholic Armenians of the Ottoman Empire. Its construction was authorized by an imperial decree of Sultan Mahmud II dated 7 October 1831; its foundation was laid on 12 May 1832 and it opened for worship on 13 January 1834. The masonry church was built with donations from the Armenian Catholic community.
