Editor's Note
Ashkenazi Jews of Austrian origin had built a wooden synagogue on this same site in 1866. The present synagogue, built in 1909 with permission granted by Abdülhamid II in 1900, entered service that year. Designed by the architect G. J. Cornaro, the building has a basilical plan and is crowned by a high dome. In this respect it is a successful Turkish reflection of the European "Cathedral Synagogue" movement.
