Editor's Note
Construction of the Tünel and its Cer (Traction) Building began on the initiative of the French engineer Eugène Henri Gavand. Visiting Istanbul as a tourist, Gavand drew up a railway project that would link Galata, the era's commercial and banking hub, with Pera, the beating heart of the city's social life, and presented it to the Ottoman Sultan Abdülaziz Han. He was granted a concession in 1869 and set to work, and by 1874 the building was largely completed. Thus, with the opening of the Tünel in 1875, the Cer Building, its technical facility, also entered service.
