Thanks to their distinctive features, these earliest covered markets, or bedestens, are the most important commercial buildings that gave the Grand Bazaar of Istanbul its present form. The first of these three bedestens, which have continued to serve as the heart of commercial activity while undergoing various changes in function and structure over the centuries, is the Cevahir Bedesteni, also known as the Old (Inner) Bedesten.
