Editor's Note
The Eski İmaret Mosque (İmâret-i Atîk Mosque), situated in the Haydar neighborhood of the Fatih district on a slope overlooking Atatürk Boulevard and the point where the Golden Horn opens onto the Marmara, was originally the church of the Pantepoptes Monastery in the Byzantine period, "dedicated to the all-seeing Christ." This monastery and its church were built by Anna Komnena, mother of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118). Since Alexios, by a decree in May 1087, transferred to another monastery certain Aegean islands he had first given to his mother's monastery, the Pantepoptes Monastery must have been founded between 1081 and 1087.
