Editor's Note
Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, another consort of Sultan Mahmud and mother of Sultan Abdülaziz, not only built the Valide Mosque bearing the name Aksaray but in 1873 also built, right next to the mosque's east gate, the Mahmudiye Rüştiye school, which she named after her husband. From the reign of Abdülaziz until the building burned down on 23 July 1911, this school produced great sons of the nation, including the eminent poet Tevfik Fikret, the great orator Hamdullah Suphi Tanrıöver, the matchless novelist Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, and the distinguished soldier Cevat Çobanlı.
