Editor's Note
The Karaağaç Lodge is one of the most important Bektashi lodges in Istanbul. While foundation records give the impression that the lodge's history goes back as far as the reign of Bayezid II, the archival documents we have on the lodge correspond to the reign of Sultan Mustafa III (1757–1774). Since the Karaağaç Lodge was the "most senior" among the Bektashi lodges of Istanbul, the oldest of the dervish elders always became the head of the Karaağaç Lodge and held the title of Deputy of Hacı Bektaş. Moreover, in the 94th company of the Janissary Corps there was a room called the "deputy's post," allocated to the Bektashi elder.
