Editor's Note
On the land in Elmadağ, a modest hospital made of wooden barracks was built for sick sailors in 1719. The site of the hospital, later named the French Plague Hospital, was donated to the French by Abdülhamid II. In 1896 the barracks were torn down and the present building constructed. With its comfortable rooms and the most modern technology of its time, the hospital was counted among the leading medical centres and was renamed the French Pasteur Hospital in 1925. In 1923, the Treaty of Lausanne barred foreign doctors from practising in Turkey.
