Editor's Note
Opened in 1870, the garden was designed by the French gardener Pierre Gustave Déroin. It was established to the north of the Artillery Barracks, on a small parcel of land where Catholic and Protestant cemeteries had formerly stood. The municipality had initially planned a larger garden, but when it was unable to expropriate the Surp Agop Armenian Cemetery to the north, it had to make do with this plot. The garden was built as a modern municipal garden, enclosed by walls, planted with orderly trees, lit by lamps, and furnished with café tables.
