Editor's Note
The Marble Tower stands at the point where Istanbul's Sea Walls (Walls of Marmara) meet the land walls known as the Theodosian Walls, and is the westernmost tower of the Sea Walls. It is a four-storey complex built of reused marble blocks, with a central courtyard and cisterns; its ramps, ramparts and crenellations point to a military function, while its interior architecture and later-added cisterns indicate residential use as well.
