This section of Istanbul's land walls is part of the great defensive system that guarded the city by land in the Byzantine period. Running toward Yedikule, the walls held Constantinople against sieges for centuries. The rows of towers and curtain walls carry into the present the trace of one of the world's most formidable medieval defences.
