Editor's Note
The imperial lodge is located in the Kalender area on Köybaşı Avenue, between Tarabya and Kireçburnu–Yeniköy. It is recorded that the first building at this site—one of old Istanbul's famous promenade grounds—was a shore palace built during the reign of Ahmed I (1603–1617) by Kalender Çavuş, one of the construction supervisors of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque. This structure, understood to have been of timber, soon fell into ruin and disappeared; the garden that remained from the shore palace was used for many years as a guard post by the bostancıs responsible for security on the Bosphorus.
