Editor's Note
This is the general name for the system of works that collected water from the Belgrade Forest and carried it to Istanbul. To meet the city's growing need for water, the Kırkçeşme works were commissioned during the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. These works were not only the finest built up to that time but, from an engineering standpoint, the most important work of the architect Mimar Sinan and his largest in terms of volume. Indeed, while the Süleymaniye Complex cost 35 million akçe, the Kırkçeşme works cost 50 million akçe.
