Built by the Byzantine state in the Kaleiçi neighbourhood in the first quarter of the 11th century, the church has a basilical plan and was constructed of finely cut basalt stone with a barrel-vaulted roof. Converted into a mosque after the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan conquered Kars and used as a mosque until the end of the 19th century, the church was abandoned after 1918 and has not been used since.
