The Çokgöz Rock Settlement was recorded by the French traveller and archaeologist Charles Texier, who came to Kayseri around 1835. According to Texier, the region was badly damaged in the earthquake of 1 August 1835; the "village of Taxiarch" was cited as the worst-hit place, and many houses in Kayseri were also seriously destroyed. As he crossed the Çokgöz Bridge over the Kızılırmak, the traveller made an engraving of the bridge and its surroundings, and he also mentioned underground chambers and passages carved into the rocks here.
