Among the bridges Sinan built in Istanbul, this is the most imposing after the one at Büyükçekmece. Although Sinan designed it for the passage of Ottoman armies on their Balkan campaigns, the bridge's structure bore the load of every kind of motor vehicle, from cars to heavy lorries, until the end of 2006. It was repaired and lit by the General Directorate of Highways between 1982 and 1985. At the end of 2006 it was closed to vehicle traffic.
