Editor's Note
This monument near the village of Bulanık in Kars province, of which today only the stone base survives, bears the characteristic features of the late-19th-century war-monument typology. The massive stone base, about 5 metres high, originally carried a large Latin cross on top. Archival photographs and field research confirm this appearance from the monument's first construction period. The architectural and symbolic features of the monument indicate that it is connected with the fighting that took place on the Caucasus Front during the 1877-1878 Ottoman-Russian War (the War of '93).
