Eskişar, today a village of Suşehri, appears in written sources as Eskişehir. There is no certain information about Eskişar's founding. However, judging from other castles in the region such as Akşar and Sis, and from Strabo's statements that many castles were built in the area, the founding of the village and castle must go back to the Pontic period, to 331-66 BC. According to Ottoman-era records, the village and castle retained their importance for a long time.
