There is no firm information about the founding of Polat Castle, which sits atop a hill east of the old village of Polat. Considering its location, the other castles in its immediate vicinity, and Strabo's account of the region, the castle's founding should be dated to the Pontic period, between 331 and 66 BC. Like the other settlements in the area, Polat Castle retained its importance during the medieval period and afterwards. The castle was built on a high hilltop that is difficult to reach.
