Editor's Note
Manisa Castle, whose ruins are visible on the northern slope of Mount Sipil (Manisa Dağı) rising just south of the centre of Manisa, consists of two parts: the "Inner Castle" and the "Outer Castle." In the Hellenistic period there was a fortress on Mount Sipylos, which served as the city's acropolis. Although it is not known when or by whom the castle was built, it is known that the city of Magnesia was surrounded by a wall. It is thought that the castle was also damaged in the earthquake of AD 17. In the Byzantine period the inner castle (Sandıkkale) appears to have been substantially renewed and encircled with an outer wall.
