Editor's Note
The Surp Astvadzadzin Monastery (in Turkish, the Monastery of the Holy Mother Mary) was an Armenian monastery complex in the town of Arapgir. It was destroyed by the Turkish government with dynamite in 1957. It was one of the largest churches in the Eastern Anatolia Region. Built in the 13th century, it had a capacity to hold about 3,000 people. After the deportation, the monastery was repaired and used as a school. In 1950, however, the Arapgir authorities decided to demolish the building; this decision was carried out by the Turkish government in 1957, and the monastery was completely destroyed.
