Editor's Note
Construction of the city walls, begun toward the end of the 1st century AD under the Roman Emperor Titus, was continued and expanded by Trajan. Work on the walls was accelerated during the reign of Constans I, and around 532 Emperor Justinian (527-565) expanded and completed them. The structure, laid out on a pentagonal plan, is in a ruined state. In the building technique seen in the surviving sections, the inner and outer faces of the walls were faced with large, regular stones, and the gaps between the flat stones were filled with rubble and bonded together with mortar.
