Taksim Gezi Park in Beyoğlu was the centre of the protests that began on 28 May 2013. The first demonstrations, against an urban development plan drawn up for the park, started with a limited number of participants; amplified through social media, they grew into one of the largest protest movements in the history of the republic, taking in wider questions of free expression and media censorship. The park is remembered today as the site of that turning point in recent history.
