Story

On the high hills of Beyoğlu, in the courtyard of Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque overlooking Galata, a wonder of water stands: the fountain. Built in the 16th century by Kılıç Ali Paşa, the legendary commander of the Ottoman navy, the mosque was constructed by the most distinguished students of the architect Sinan. With its four elegant taps and carved marble structure, this fountain is one of the finest examples of Ottoman water architecture. Kılıç Ali Paşa was a corsair-commander known in history as the Lion of the Seas, who hunted many European ships in the Indian Ocean. In every corner of this marble fountain, the refinement of Ottoman geometry can be seen. In the morning hours, when the first rays of the sun begin to dance upon the marble, this historic structure seems to come face to face with living history. A visiting tip: while sitting in the mosque courtyard, watching the reflections in the water will let you see Istanbul and Ottoman architecture with fresh eyes.
