Story
The fountain of Nusretiye Mosque is the beating heart of this 19th-century structure, the iconic monument of Tophane. Commissioned by Sultan Mahmut II in 1826, the mosque's marble-carved ablution basin carries the elegant lines of Ottoman architecture. Its geometric patterns and marble craftsmanship reflect the character of the reform era, marked by European influence. An interesting detail: thanks to its acoustic design, the water flowing beneath the fountain's octagonal dome echoes through the mosque courtyard. This 200-year-old stone monument remains one of the most important cultural symbols of Beyoğlu. If you come early in the morning during your visit, you can see the marble details more beautifully in the daylight and take a journey into history along the quiet streets of Tophane.
