Story

Located on the historic streets of Fatih, near Edirnekapı, the ablution fountain of the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque is another example of the refined design of the 16th-century Ottoman architect Sinan. Carved into the shape of a heart in marble, this şadırvan carries a mystical air as it greets visitors in the mosque's courtyard. The importance given to the mosque, which bears the name of Mihrimah Sultan, the most beloved daughter of Suleiman the Magnificent, is reflected in the modest yet graceful architecture of the fountain. The fountain's multi-layered design symbolizes, in Ottoman art, the divine purity of flowing water. Rising after the conquest of Istanbul, this structure has maintained its presence for five centuries in this sacred place where the people of Fatih have worshipped. When visiting, do not forget to look closely at the refinement of the marble craftsmanship; from every angle of the fountain you can see echoes of Istanbul's old fabric.
