Story
Built on a hilltop in Silivri, Selymbria Castle, with its position commanding the Sea of Marmara, is a witness to the region's defensive history from antiquity to the present. The architectural traces of the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods can be seen in layers within its stone walls. The watchmen looking out to sea from the towers would light fires to give warning when danger approached; this signaling system was a pioneering communication method of antiquity. Its thick walls formed the strongest defensive line on the European side of the Marmara. The architecture of different civilizations, built one upon another, carries a layer of history; each layer tells of the periods the region lived through and the changing strategies of war. The panoramic sea view that opens from the towers inspires awe. Recommended visit: climb to the towers at the top of the castle at sunset; the sight of the city's lights coming on beneath the centuries-old stones is magnificent.
