Story
Karatepe Museum is an open-air museum that preserves the Late Hittite frontier fortress and the surrounding archaeological landscape within Karatepe-Aslantaş National Park in Kadirli. Built by Asativatas in the eighth century BCE to defend against attacks from the north, the settlement contains two large fortified gates, the road linking them, rooms, statues, and reliefs. Bilingual texts written in the Phoenician alphabet and Luwian hieroglyphs played an important role in deciphering Luwian hieroglyphs. Excavations began in 1947, and because the site has been preserved together with its natural forest, the remains can be viewed within their historic landscape.
