Yanartaş is identified with the place known in antiquity as Mount Chimaera, a site in ancient Lycia famous for its constantly burning fires, where methane and other gases such as hydrogen emerge from the rock and ignite. Some ancient sources regarded this natural flame phenomenon as the origin of the myth of the monster called the Chimera.
