Cafer Höyük is a settlement mound about 40 km northeast of the city of Malatya, now submerged beneath the waters of the Karakaya Dam. The area is thought to have been inhabited around 9,000 years ago; the finds here indicate that people in the Malatya region moved out of caves into settled life by gathering wild grain and then took up farming.
