Editor's Note
The Forum of Constantine was an ancient Roman public square on Istanbul's historic peninsula, in the area where the Column of Constantine (Çemberlitaş) stands today. After the city was declared capital in 330, Constantine I had it built as the central forum of the new capital. The circular plaza had two monumental gateways on its east and west opening onto the main avenue, the Mese, while at its center stood the porphyry column, still standing today, known as Çemberlitaş. The forum survived largely intact from its construction until it was looted in 1204.
