Late-Hittite Carchemish on the Syrian border, only opened to visitors in 2019 after decades of mine clearance.
Editor's Note
Carchemish was an important ancient capital in the northern part of Syria, with origins reaching back to the Early Bronze Age. At various times independent or part of the Mitanni, Hittite and Neo-Assyrian Empires, it was known as Europus in Roman times. It now lies on the border between Turkey and Syria.
