Story
Rising at the gateway to the Bosphorus, on the Fatih shore, Yedikule Fortress (the Fortress of Seven Towers) is a castle-museum built in 1457 by Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror to defend the city. This architectural masterpiece, which takes its name from its seven towers, played a role in İstanbul's defense for five centuries. Its thick walls and period windows speak of the military power and building craft of the Ottoman era. Serving as a museum today, Yedikule Fortress offers visitors collections that reveal various aspects of Ottoman life. Spanning a wide range from weapons to everyday objects, and from works of art to historical documents, the exhibits unite past and present. The fortress towers can be climbed, and from their tops the views of the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus unfold. Here visitors experience walking through history, discovering a new story with every step. Coming early in the morning is recommended, as the quieter atmosphere and natural light provide ideal conditions for observing the details within the castle.
