Arnabanda was a city of ancient Lycia, set on the 1200-meter hill known as Alacahisar, some 4 km northwest of the village of Belören near Demre. Scholars have argued that the settlement on Alacahisar is the Arnabanda that recurs in the Vita of Nicholas; C. Foss, working from the text, placed it an hour from the Monastery of Sion on Mount Kaisar, in a sheltered spot that should hold a church contemporary with the monastery and similarly decorated. The effort to match text to terrain gives the ruin a story beyond its name.
