Hidden on the green hills of Beykoz, near the arms of the Black Sea, Amycus (Bithynia) is one of the important settlements where the civilizations of Anatolia were built one upon another. An open point of maritime trade in antiquity, this site bears witness to the present day through its marble ruins, stone foundations, and harbor structures. Traces of habitation reaching from the Trojan period through the Hellenistic and Roman eras show just how significant a role Amycus played in Anatolia's strategic trade corridors. The advanced architectural and cartographic knowledge of the Bithynians reveals that the city had an orderly and well-planned layout. On your visit you can see the foundations of ancient mudbrick structures rising around the excavation areas and the old quay paving lapped by waves at the water's edge. Do not forget to examine the small museum displays accompanied by local guides; the ceramic fragments and coin collection found here speak to the diversity of the trade networks.
