Arsamosata was an ancient city on the bank of the Euphrates, near present-day Elazığ, in Armenian Sophene. Founded in the 3rd century BC by King Arsames I of the Orontid dynasty, it was known as Armosota and Arsamosota in Roman and Byzantine times and as Ashmushat in the Middle Ages.
