Arsamosata was an ancient city on the bank of the Euphrates, near present-day Elazığ, in Armenian Sophene. Founded in the 3rd century BC by King Arsames I of the Orontid dynasty, it was known as Armosota and Arsamosota in Roman and Byzantine times and as Ashmushat in the Middle Ages.

- The name is recorded as Arsamosata in Ptolemy's Geography of AD 150, as Arşmîşat by John of Ephesus in 569, as Arşamuşat in the chronicle of Matthew of Edessa in 1136, and as Şimşât in Yakut al-Hamawi's dictionary of 1220.
- Örencik village was formerly called Haraba; in Turkish records of 1928 the settlement appears as Harabe.
- The city served as the royal residence of the Orontid dynasty of Sophene.
