Perge is an ancient city about 18 km east of Antalya, within the Aksu district, which once served as the capital of the Pamphylia region. Its acropolis is thought to have been founded in the Bronze Age, and in the Hellenistic period the city ranked among the richest and most beautiful of the ancient world; it was also the home of the mathematician Apollonius of Perga.
