Story

Housed in Building 2 of the Cerrahpasa Faculty of Medicine, the Museum of Medical History sits among the narrow historic streets of Fatih in central Istanbul and offers a perfect intersection of Ottoman medicine and modern medical education. Operating continuously since 1566, this campus is far more than an educational institution; it is a living witness to the East-West transmission of medical science. It embraced Western medical methods with the reforms of the 19th-century Tanzimat era, and the rich archives and collections formed in that process make up the core of the museum. The display cases preserve works from every period: elegant Ottoman medical manuscripts, surgical instruments of the era, antique and modern pharmacy bottles, and everything from the stethoscope to the first gynecological instruments. White walls, wooden cases, and quiet halls lead visitors step by step through centuries of medical history. An interesting fact for enthusiasts of the history of science and health: Cerrahpasa is one of the world's first modern medical faculties, and the surgical techniques developed here were among the methods followed in Europe in the first quarter of the 20th century.
