Editor's Note
One of İstanbul's largest covered cisterns, the Binbirdirek (Cistern of the Thousand and One Columns) was commissioned in the 4th century by the Roman senator Philoxenus. This vast underground structure, supported by 224 columns, is the city's most impressive water reservoir after the Basilica Cistern.
